Gilles Street Market: Keith samples the market's wares in the Adelaide City region of South Australia

Every city has its markets. Portobello Road is famous in London, the Central Market is probably Adelaide's best known. Some of our country towns have booming Farmers Markets but Adelaide's newest market is in the Gilles Street Primary School yards. It's full of buzzing, funky, designer fashion.

Welcome to the Gilles Street Market. Those in the know call it Adelaide's premier fashion and design market - if it's colourful and you can wear it - you'll find it here.

Dozens of stalls cram into the schoolyard on the third Sunday of the month - so this is the place to find designer samples, clearance stock, pre-loved fashion and, of course South Australia's latest bright young designers like Azedeh and her handmade Azalia Jewellery for example. She's had her creations in shows in Sydney and Melbourne - but she loves the market.

Azedeh, Azalia Jewellery: "My jewellery is for everyday wear but not everyday jewellery."

No two markets are the same, with stallholders changing each month so you need to put plenty of time aside to wander around to just soak up the relaxed, laid back atmosphere - the resident DJ takes care of that…

Good mates Simone and Christina run Sequoia Designs - what they describe as 're-designed vintage fashion'.

Christina: "We studied together last year and became really good friends and this year we just came to the markets and got really inspired and we thought let's do it and now we've just got a little label going on."

Many of the stalls carry heavily discounted stock you'll usually find in their more up market outlets. It's all very laid back and all age groups are covered - what about a pair of handmade babies booties from Miss Polly? Or a little girl's cross-stitch dress for that 'special occasion'.

Now all that shopping can work up a thirst. That's taken care of too by James Stock, the smooth operator of 'Smooth Revolution'. He'll whip up a smoothie for you on his modified exercise bike. The taste sensations don't stop there. Lot's of food on offer, from freshly baked muffins to healthy snacks.

The Gilles Street Market os on every third Sunday of the month. It's in the Gilles Street Primary School - and runs from 10 til 4. If you have any further questions please email info@postcards-sa.com.au
