Ceduna Foreshore Hotel: With Ron Kandelaars in the West Coast region of South Australia
Ceduna is one of the busiest regional ports in South Australia and the gateway to a host of holiday options. The township and its nearby port of Thevenard is located a good 750 kilometres from Adelaide which makes it the perfect stopping off point for those who want to explore the region.
From the oyster beds of nearby Smoky Bay to the spectacular Bunda Cliffs on the Nullarbor Ceduna offers a great launching pad for those escaping the stresses of daily life. But truth be known you need venture no further than the Ceduna Foreshore Hotel for a taste of the laid back life in this fishing mecca. From the dining room you can keep tabs on the progress of those catching plenty of what's often on the daily menu.
It started out as the Murat Bay Hotel back in 1902 when the town had a remote population of just 37 souls. But people have been dropping in - on their way east and west - ever since. And they've been coming on any mode of transport available.
It was just after the war that the hotel's strong community focus certainly came to the fore.
"It came onto the market in 1949 and seven people in the community said 'wouldn't it be great to buy as a community investment' and so they got together to have a meeting around the table and decided to buy it as a community based venture. So since 1949 it's been a community hotel."
And the community now owns a pretty flash pub with $8.5 million dollars just spent on the newly refurbished complex. And that's only the beginning with plans for another fifteen rooms to be completed over the next two years. The Best Western Ceduna Foreshore Hotel is on the corner of McKenzie and O'Loughlin Streets.
