Eyre Peninsula Seafood and Aquaculture Trail: Ron tests his taste buds on the West Coast in the Eyre Peninsula region of South Australia
Arno Bay on Eyre Peninsula is a classic South Aussie blend of fishing town and farming community. The grain silos that dominate the landscape are cathedrals to agriculture - monuments to the generations of men and women who have grown wheat and barley for decades.
But times are changing on Eyre Peninsula. While the wheat and barley crops still ripen in the sun a host of new crops now fatten up in the pristine waters of Spencer Gulf. All along the coastline you'll spot boats and their crews tending to holding pens of wild southern blue fin tuna.
The fish in the pens have been caught kilometres off shore and brought back to the waters off Arno Bay. Further up the Gulf are other pens - some bulging with yellow tail kingfish. It's all part of an aquaculture industry that has exploded in recent years and one, which you can better understand by following the Peninsula's Seafood and Aquaculture Trail.
The Stehr Group also has an Education Centre on the North Quay at the Port Lincoln Marina. It includes an audiovisual display on the latest developments in aquaculture. Brochures on the Aquaculture and Seafood Trail are available at various visitor centres. If you have any further questions please email info@postcards-sa.com.au
