Whale Centre: Victor Harbor, in the Fleurieu Peninsula region of South Australia
The South Australian Whale Centre at Victor Harbor is considered the focal point of whale related activity across southern Australia. It is housed in a restored 130 year old heritage building across from the beautiful foreshore of Encounter Bay, and proudly owned and operated by the City of Victor Harbor.
This world class attraction hosts three floors of fascinating displays and numerous hands-on opportunities for all ages. Discover the world of whales, our whaling heritage, and the amazing creatures that live along our coast. Featured exhibits include life-size paintings of whales, a video that shows whales up-close and in action, an aquarium with local marine species, whale skeletons, whaling artefacts, cd roms and the largest stretched canvas in the Southern Hemisphere, which shows off the colourful world beneath the sea.
A winner of 3 Fleurieu Tourism awards, the SA Whale Centre is a must see experience, and is open daily for general admissions. Special events and programs regularly run during school holidays, and schools and coaches are always welcome to have guided tours of the Centre on weekdays (bookings are essential).
The SA Whale Centre is also the state's key source of whale sighting information, and lets the public know just where to find the visiting Southern Right whales throughout the whale watching season (May - September). People seeking whale information should visit the Centre for details on current sightings, directions to local vantage points, and a free booklet on whale behaviour. The public can also call the Whale Information Hotline for the latest locations and information in Encounter Bay and across the state: 1900 931 223.
