What makes a relationship tick and what fans the fires of love? Well remembering your anniversary helps for a start. And a group of young Adelaide designers have done their bit to get you through the first few years of that special relationship.

On the top floor of Urban Cow Studio a group of young contemporary jewellers have done their bit to wean starry-eyed lovers off the more expensive and traditional items of jewellery in an exhibition entitled We Don't Do Diamonds. Here, each of the first seven anniversaries have found their artistic expression in traditional material. From paper in year one all the way to Meghann Jones's take on the "seven year itch".

“Meghann’s used wool,” said Katrina Weber explaining the link between wool and itching the skin. “She’s gone with wool to represent the seven year itch and the feel of the wool on the skin.”

Some other contemporary designers take a different view on the way we celebrate, or in some cases, evaluate where a relationship is going. For Anne Weckert and Nicole Ivanov that means dealing with tricky questions of just where lust ends and love begins - and doing it with leather.

“In relationships there's good stuff which you always remember and you always talk about,” said Anne. “But there's also the stuff that's not so good and that's what makes a strong relationship anyway.”

From silver paper earrings by Amy Lewis to Katrina Weber's pieces in wood, "We Don't Do Diamonds" is all about making the refreshingly honest out of the functional. Katrina's wooden rings were made from the chip bowl from which she and a former partner used to share nibbles in front of the TV.

“I destroyed the chip bowl - that was in my last relationship. That was very therapeutic. It's a bit of fun - a take on the whole idea of a relationship these days in this modern world.”

All pieces are designed to be worn and are on sale at Urban Cow Studio in Frome Street, Adelaide.
