Toffee & Treats: At Penola in the Limestone Coast region of South Australia

Ask any adult about their childhood, and before long, they will be reminiscing about the quality and variety of sweets that they enjoyed as youngsters. Eyes take on that far-away look, as they remember the humbugs, black cats, gobstoppers or any of their other favourites from those earlier times.
Isn’t it a shame they don’t make sweets like that anymore? They do. They really do. The Limestone Coast town of Penola is home to Toffee & Treats, an old fashioned sweets shop that stocks the all-time favourites, together with hundreds of others that we had almost forgotten.
A huge variety confronts you as you enter the shop, where you are surrounded by the unmistakable aroma of confectionery. It is crunch time, and some serious decisions must be made. Toffee coated macadamia nuts or macadamia ice-cream are high on the list of favourites, and both are made locally. Umbrellas, Rosey Apples, Traffic Lights, U.F.O’s and Sherbet Bombs have remained popular for decades, while Monster Gobstoppers, Dummies, Lollipops and Twist Pops are wonderful for some peace and quiet.
fudge lovers will have to choose between Vanilla, Caramel, Almond, Apricot, Cappacino, Rum & Raisin, Choc-Caramel and Macadamia. In the Pink Lady Truffle Bar range, select from caramel, peppermint, ginger or nutty honey nougat.
Memories of our past are jolted with aniseed balls, almond milk rock, black cats, humbugs, chocolate filled peppermints, fruit sours and acid drops. Parents and grandparents will relive their childhood with pear drops, butterballs, honeycomb, black jelly beans, fruit frogs, raspberries, chicos, honey bears, strawberry creams, dolly mixture, toffee bon bons, strawberry bon bons, natural fruit jubes, rainbow jellies, wine gums and fruit slices.
If you are looking for a Toffee treat then Aunty Joans Macadamia and Magic Mix Gourmet Toffee maybe the one, or you may prefer macadamia brittle, peanut brittle, Walkers tray toffee blocks of original, treacle, brazilnut, roasted hazelnut or fruit and nut.
Licorice lovers will be delighted with the selection, which includes big straps, inch blocks, Bassetts allsorts, candy bullets, chocolate bullets, giant chocolate bullets and raspberry bullets. Also catered for are lovers of Dutch licorice, with chalk chews, double salted, triple salted, cats, salmiac rock and buttons.
The range of chocolate confectionery is vast, and includes Turkish delight, peppermint creams,nougat, coffee creams, Fruchocs, honeycomb and cobbers.
Kids of all ages will delight in the apple straps, giant freckles, fizzy gum bottles, sour worms and gummi bears. You may prefer giant smarties, chocolate toads, giant pythons, butterflies, turtles or bees.
A wide range of sugar free sweets are also available.
