Rural City of Murray Bridge Rural City of Murray Bridge

With the opening of the Heysen Tunnels, Murray Bridge is only 50 minutes from Adelaide.

Originally called Edwards Crossing, Murray Bridge became a pivotal point for overland transportation of goods, passengers and gold during the 1800s as well as being the major port for the paddleboats that traversed the Murray during those early years.

Today the Rural City of Murray Bridge is the largest regional river city in South Australia, boasting numerous shopping facilities, first class amenities and quality tourist destinations.

Murray Bridge has three landmark bridges providing a vital link with the Eastern States.

The first bridge was built in 1879 and was the first bridge to span the Murray River. This was followed by a rail bridge, which was opened in 1925. In 1979 Swanport Bridge, on the Princes Highway, was completed. This Bridge is the longest road bridge across the River Murray.
