Pelican's Retreat: At American River on Kangaroo Island, South Australia

Kangaroo Island, only 16km from mainland Cape Jervis, is one of South Australia's best kept secrets. The 4,300km2 island is a mecca for anglers, photographers, nature lovers and also those who just want to relax and enjoy this wonderful unspoilt region.

The town of American River, towards the eastern end of the island, overlooks the protected waters of Pelican Lagoon, and the teeming flocks of water birds. On a hillside overlooking this idyllic scene is the aptly named 'Pelican's Retreat', a four bedroom holiday home providing absolute comfort for up to 10 guests. Established by the owners as their personal KI holiday home, Pelican's Retreat is completely equipped with everything necessary for a comfortable and memorable stay.

From the wide front verandah, complete with barbecue and outdoor furniture, the visitor can marvel at the serenity and beauty of Pelican Lagoon and nearby Mount Thisby. Containing four bedrooms and two bathrooms, the home is perfect for two families. The two double bedrooms have queen size ensembles, another bedroom has bunks and a single ensemble, while the fourth has bunks.

A fold down lounge in the main living area also converts to a bed and a cot is available if required. This beautifully appointed home is self-catering and provides accommodation of above-average standard. Supplies are available from the shops in the nearby town of American River. Linen can be supplied on request, and a minimum stay of two nights applies. A vehicular ferry and aircraft regularly service the island.

Peaceful lagoons, excellent fishing, awesome coastal scenery and abundant wildlife are some of the reasons why you should indulge in a Kangaroo Island experience.
