Metal and Stone Metal and Stone - Fine Australian Jewellery: Lisa visits Laura in the Mid North region of South Australia

It seems some traditions die-hard in the pretty town of Laura. Back at the turn of last century the town jeweller, Mr Sterling ran a shop in the main street. The locals would come for treasured momentos, which mark the special occasions in a person's life. Not much has changed - present day owner Richard Ivey continues a tradition as old as civilisation itself.

In a back room in the quiet mid-north town, a team of jewellers, hammer saw and file their way through an assortment of precious metals and gems. And all the while, that sense of ancient craftsmanship continues.

In the crucible, Richard cradles another batch of liquid gold but it's his imagination, which has fired some of the truly remarkable fusions of metal and stone.

Australain white and coloured diamonds in gold and platinum, designed and handmade to be wearable and strong in well resolved forms.

Much of the work created at Metal and Stone is a blend of human creativity and what nature has thrown up over eons. Cowell Jade has been fashioned into a dramatic piece and Cooper Pedy Opal has found its way into a necklace.

Richard Ivey's Metal and Stone jewellery shop is in the main street of Laura. His city store is in Grenfell Street in the East End just up from East Terrace.

Richard's Uluru Collection can be found at the Mulgara Gallery in the foyer of Sails In The Desert. Friendly and knowledgeable staff can explain and authenticate each piece. They can show you loose gemstones and discuss your own special commissions for design. This is an exclusive opportunity to select a truly unique and precious part of Australia.
