Adelaide Hills

Melba's Choclates Melba's Chocolate Factory - Woodside: In the Adelaide Hills region of South Australia

There's nowhere in the world quite like Melba's. A drive through the Adelaide Hills is not complete without dropping into Melbas' Chocolate Factory at Woodside. Melba's started from humble beginnings 25 years ago in the back of an Adelaide Restaurant run by Joy and Graeme Foristal, but increased demand forced them to move to larger premises. The new premise was found at Woodside in the form of a disused, heritage listed milk factory that has now blossomed into a complete multi-purpose venue. Plans are a foot for Bed and Breakfast accommodation on site - watch this space.

Evolution and adaptation is the name of the game here with the creation of a chocolate and confectionery facility in what was once Farmer's Union Cheese Factory. Whilst old fashioned licorice blocks, and the many lollies that stir the memories of our childhood are made here at Woodside, Joy and Graeme were instrumental in developing what's now known as the Easter Bilby. So Melba's has both new and old taste sensations to instigate memories and make us thankful for our sweet tooth. One youngster or young at heart wrote in the visitors' book "Lolly Heaven" Melba's also supplies chocolates and a host of other confectionery to leading corporate clients around the country.

The 1930's turnstiles at the entrance to the Chocolate Factory were once used at the Royal Adelaide Show; they set the scene for what's to come. You see, Joy and Graeme are committed to recreating the past and the unique way confectionery used to be made. The restored machines from yesteryear used in this working factory, and the old style confectionery they produce take you back in time. It's a wonderful journey. Try walking past the sample trays and not be tempted.

To head to Melba's, follow the signs from the Hahndorf - Woodside exit on the South Eastern Freeway. It's open seven days a week including Public Holidays from 9.00 am to 4.30 pm. Parking is at rear of Melba's Chocolate Factory.
