Melba's Chocolate Factory

The next time you're driving through the Adelaide Hills, it's worth dropping into Melba's Chocolate Factory at Woodside. Melba's started from a humble beginning 20 years ago in the back of an Adelaide Restaurant run by Graeme and Joy Foristal, but increased demand forced them to move to larger premises. The new premises was found at Woodside in the form of a disused milk factory that has now blossomed into a complete multi-purpose venue.

The old fashioned licorice block is the flagship of Melba's - take a tour and see how it's made, they'll even let you help. The range of products at Melba's has grown from 20 to 200 - boosted by an accidental introduction to confectionary. Graeme's problem is that he is really into lollies. All the machinery at Melba's is old.. and some have a pretty interesting history.. there is even a machine that was used to make wads for 303 rifles during WW2-- now it's used to make lollies. Melba's were instrumental in developing what's now known as the Easter Bilby.

The building that houses Melba's is Heritage Listed - it used to be the old cheese section of the Farmers Union factory and the long term plan is to build bed and breakfast accomodation upstairs. There's nowhere in the world quite like Melba's. To head to Melba's, follow the signs from the Hahndorf - Woodside exit on the South Eastern Freeway. It's open seven days a week including Public Holidays from 9.00 am to 4.30 pm. Parking is at rear of Melba's Chocolate Factory. Click here for more information on Melba's Chocolate Factory
