Marion Bay Tavern: In the Yorke Peninsula region of South Australia
Over the year's the Postcards team has certainly fallen under the spell of Innes National Park at the bottom of Yorke Peninsula. From the historic old ghost town of Inneston to the shack village at Pondalowie Bay, the park offers so many options for holiday makers, whether it's surfing at one of the Yorke's many breaks or wetting a line for some Peninsula mullet.
In your travels around what's called "the tip of the toe" it pays to drop into the Marion Bay Tavern where the local seafood features heavily on the pizza menu. The Tavern is owned by Graham Virgin, an ex-surfer who fell in love with the Peninsula years ago. Now he and his wife Robyn have come up with a few novel additions to the pub. If the wood fire gets out of control they know they can't rely on the rainwater tank because it's now a vital part of the Marion Bay culinary scene - it’s the pizza oven.
“It looks fantastic and it’s a great feature of the tavern and the pizzas are really popular.”
And little wonder when you see what Tristan Reynolds puts on them.
“There is a real art to making pizza dough, especially for wood ovens because we can’t make them up on trays - it goes straight on the floor of the oven. So the trick is to keep plenty of flour between the surfaces. Otherwise it will stick and make a hell of a mess.”
With a liberal layer of tomato sauce and cheese, on goes the seafood marinated in oil and herbs. In this case calamari, prawns, baby octopus and finally smoked oysters. Into the rainwater tank for several minutes and presto - the seafood special.
It's a real hit at the Marion Bay Tavern overlooking the local jetty. The Tavern is open daily from 10 am until midnight. For more details visit their web page at www.sahotels.com.au/marionbay
