KI Artworks - Lisa McAskill visits the Kangaroo Island region of South Australia
Travel around the delights of Kangaroo Island and you soon understand why it holds a special place for the sensitive soul. With such are variety of attractions and scenery it's little wonder that many have popped over for a quick break, to get the creative juices flowing - only to stay.
Kangaroo Island has always been a magnet for artists and Baudin Beach is home to a little artists' collective that's well worth a look.
KI Artworks is an outlet for nearly sixty artists from around the island. It's an eclectic mix and the imposing sculpture of an octopus near the entrance tells you that marine themes tend to dominate. Penneshaw artist, Dave Clarke, carved it from local limestone.
At KI Artworks you can tour the island through the lens of local photographer Ann Lashmar.
The space and freedom of KI allows the artistic imagination to run wild. And run it certainly does in Cindy Henrich's elegant two piece number made from paper mache, copper wire and beads. If Cindy's copper couture is not your thing then how about Deb Sleeman's galvo dress.
From verandah sculptures made of galvo to ceramic teapots you never know what you'll find at KI Artworks. You'll find it at Baudin Beach about ten minute's drive from the Penneshaw Ferry Terminal.
It's open daily except Wednesday. And if you want a real appreciation of the KI Art scene then why not head over to the Island for Penneshaw's Easter Art Exhibition from April 14th to the April 23rd. 2006. If you have any further questions please email info@postcards-sa.com.au
