Great Eastern Hotel
A Littlehampton landmark is the Great Eastern Hotel. Named after the old Great Eastern land route to Melbourne on which it is located, the grand old hotel was built in 1845 and was first licensed in 1854. In that time quite a few beers have been drunk in the front bar and a lot of history has occurred.
No longer just the domain of the working man, the modern Great Eastern Hotel is a place where families can come and enjoy a night out. Under new management since March 2001, the pub is operated by Brian and Gail Coles along with their daughter Alison.
Brian and Gail are slowly making improvements to the hotel with a new pokies room containing nine machines.
Meals are served at the Great Eastern from noon to 2pm for lunch and 6pm to 9pm for dinner. Good pub food is available - all the favourites such as fish and chips, schnitzels and lasagne. Other dishes on the menu include calamari, T-bone steak and salad. All main meals are served with salad or vegetables.
Snacks and kids meal are also available along with cappuccinos for the adults and hot chocolates and milk shakes for the kids.
The hotel operates PubTAB, has Sky Channel, and operates a bottle shop.
The mural in the front bar depicting the Oakbank Races is an attraction in itself. The pub also has a somewhat darker history. In the early 1900s the hotel's cellars were used as a morgue and a friendly ghost is said to haunt the building.
During your next trip into the Hills, drop into the historic Great Eastern Hotel and sample the Cole's family hospitality. You and your family will be made to feel welcome.
The Great Eastern Hotel is located at 71 Main Road, Littlehampton. Phone 8391 1712.
