Craigs Hill Villas - Clare
The Clare Valley has carved a reputation for quality wine ever since the Jesuits began making sacramental wine at Sevenhill in 1851. Clare itself sits in a valley about two hours drive north of Adelaide and is a popular weekend destination. The Clare Valley is associated with wine and behind me is the vineyards of Jim Barry. If you are thinking of having a weekend here with friends then there's a great place to stay and it's called Craig's Hill. Craig's Hill is a little different from many bed and breakfasts in that it is designed for groups and can take up to eight people. It was originally the home of Archibald Craig.
The 100 year old house features wide verandahs that give a view north to the Flinders Ranges and south to Sevenhill. The house is a wonderful example of an early Australian villa. In addition to the main rooms inside the house there is a stone building at the rear which has been converted into a loft. Owners Mary & Desmond Kennedy have lavished much TLC on the house and it's decoration, giving it a friendly atmosphere and warmth. The real "show stopper" however at Craig's Hill is the garden. Designed by Walter Duncan of The Rose Garden, an authority on heritage roses, it frames the house with a myriad of fragrant blooms - a peaceful retreat after a hard days' wine tasting. Craig's Hill costs $100 dollars per person for a weekend and can accommodate up to eight people. Phone (08) 8379-5595 or for more information email: info@postcards.sa.com.au
