The Corio Hotel
The Corio Hotel at Goolwa was named after the Paddlesteamer "Corio" which sank on the Murray River in 1857, the year that the Hotel was built. The hotel has continued ever since to service its many patrons with the produce of South Australia's breweries, wineries and excellent foods. An interesting feature of the Hotel are "The Great Yankee Doodle Tobacco" ceiling posters. These posters are reproductions of a painting called "The Spirit of 76" by Archibald M Willard. The original painting titled "Yankee Doodle" was a humorous depiction of the Four of July celebrations, but was changed from humorous to patriotic for the Centennial Exposition of 1876 in Philadelphia USA. Coloured reproductions such as those on the ceiling of the Corio were sold prior to the centennial under their new title "The Spirit of 76". Patrons can enjoy these posters on a visit to the hotel.
