Outback Cattle DriveOutback Cattle Drive in 2005: In the Outback region of South Australia

For some trips you need to start planning early. That’s certainly what the early drovers had to do when preparing for one of their epic cattle drives.

Before semi-trailers took over the transportation of cattle from remote northern stations, cattlemen would drive their herds from places like Birdsville in the Channel Country all the way to the railhead at Marree in outback South Australia.

Two years ago members of the famous Oldfield family and others re-enacted those pioneering days as part of the Great Australian Outback Cattle Drive.

Well it's on again in 2005 - and the word is spreading throughout the country and overseas. Tickets for droving packages have gone on sale in Germany France, Italy, the UK and the US.

The event will begin at Birdsville in Outback Queensland on April 30, 2005 and end at Marree in South Australia six weeks later.

Tours are separated into four stages, each offering a unique experience: The Channel Country, The Gibber Plains, the Cooper Basin and Marree.
