Casa del Sur
It's a long way from the coast of California to the Semaphore Esplanade, but it's just one of the many journeys Sam Tarin has made in what's been a very full life. Sam's a Mexican American who lived through the blur that was the flower power scene of sixties in San Francisco. Now he says he's one of the few who can remember it. Originally trained as a draftsman and graphic designer, Sam later found that his true calling was in handcrafting jewellery. And as the years have moved forward, Sam's gone back, back to his roots and the designs and motifs found during his earlier travels. Sam came to Australia in 1993 and two years later established Casa Del Sur, his Southern home. And in keeping with his new found roots, he now combines his Mexican and North American Indian designs with a very local product...South Australian opal. His work with sterling silver is both intricate and striking and made to last and when he's not hammering away in his workshop, he's scouring the markets of North America and Mexico in search of both the spiritual and the hedonistic. Sam's array of hand-crafted jewellery and gifts is on show from Tuesday through to Sunday at Casa Del Sur at 99 Semaphore Road Semaphore.
