Axel Stenross Museum

There was once a young man called Axel Stenross who was born in Finland around the turn of the century and who dreamed of life on the high seas. As a young man he achieved his dream and sailed the world. Of all the places he saw he loved Boston Bay and Port Lincoln and so in 1927 he went ashore and stayed.

He and partner Frank Laakso set up a business and for sixty years they built ships and dinghys. Alex was still making boats right up until his death at the age of 84 and since then enthusiasts at Port Lincoln have kept his memory and his workshop alive. The Axel Stenross Maritime Museum is a step back..... with the equipment and the tools still as they were when the business was running. There's a fully working slipway and blacksmith shop and a range of photos and diagrams, sails and knots. It looks junky-- but that's perfect for boaties who want to pick over the remains of how things used to be done. The Axel Stenross Maritime Museum is easy to find-- it's on the Lincoln Highway from the town to the airport, on the waterfront-- look out for the dinghy on the pole. Opening times are in the afternoon on Tuesday, Thursday, weekends and public holidays. For more information ph (Aust) 086 823 624 or email: info@postcards.sa.com.au
