Andrew Steiner - Sculptor: In the Adelaide City region of South Australia
Throughout history and across cultures, the circle has been a symbol of renewal and it's a theme Adelaide artist Andrew Steiner has explored in depth in his sculpture park outside his home at Stonyfell in the Adelaide foothills.
You're welcome to explore Andrew's half hectare property set on sprawling grounds with the Stonyfell Creek running right through the middle. He's been here for 28 years - forever adding to cast iron and steel monuments outside his restored 1850s coach house.
"Many of the sculptures are combinations of disused heavy machinery from the nearby Stonyfell Quarry," explained Andrew.
Old grinders, gear wheels and an assortment of other pieces have been hauled into this leafy retreat and welded together in Andrew's homage to the circle.
"Some of them are exceedingly heavy and I had to have two cranes to lift them in positions," said Andrew. "I think I have around fifty of them in the garden. They all have their own area and they tend to relate to each other."
Head into his studio and you'll find encounter Andrew's other passion - woodcarving. The day we were there he was working on ancient slabs of Huon pine. Long dead in the forests of Tasmania but now coming to life in a garden workshop in Stonyfell.
"Everything I use has been long dead. In other words there's nothing new, there's nothing destroyed. Rather something that has almost been lost has been recreated into something living. It's being able to see something within it and helping it to emerge."
