Alfresco at Junipers: At Angaston, in the Barossa Valley region of South Australia
(Text & pictures supplied by Sightseeing South Australia)
With a sleek modern decor and creekside position, Alfresco at Junipers offers customers a unique dining experience in the Barossa Valley.
Located in the main street of Angaston, this classic but casual cafe/restaurant is the latest addition to the Barossa Valley's ever-increasing stable of high quality eating establishments.
Tables are dressed in white linen, French doors open onto the large alfresco area shaded by an ancient paperbark tree, and you are served modern Australian cuisine by the restaurant's hosts Peter Hill and Janet Mugge.
From the comfort of your table you can see Peter cook before your eyes in the open kitchen.
"It's fresh Australian food with a slight Mediterranean twist," Peter says.
"It's very informal during the day, we like to keep our prices reasonable and we encourage people to check the winelist as we only select affordable wines."
For lunch you can sample the slow cooked lamb shanks in a thick rich traditional sauce, served on peppered garlic Polenta mash, accompanied with a bottle of Barossa shiraz; or for something lighter try the caramelised leek and asparagus filo parcel wrapped with pistachio nuts, sun dried roma tomato and Pecorino cheese, accompanied with a glass of Thorn Clarke Sandpiper Riesling.
"We like to keep a selection of the more unknown local Barossa wines," Peter says.
"The Thorn Clarke wines, for example, are export only and have very limited domestic exposure."
Other items on the menu include an all-day breakfast, shared platters and desserts.
Having only opened in December, Alfresco at Junipers has already attracted a cult following for late breakfasts, lazy lunches and delightful dinners.
Bookings are not essential but very much appreciated. Open seven days.
